Program Note:

‘’Re-align the time’’

I composed Squarepushers at my desk; wiped clear of my laptop and keyboard. Small fortune cookie-sized slips of manuscript, graph paper, pencil, and voice – just me and my arts and crafts station. I sang patterns and wrote them down. I sang and harmonized short phrases. Soon I had squares of musical paper in front of me, like blocks of sound laid out on an electronic music sequencer. I began to organize my squares like I would an electronic piece; time stretching, pitch bending, and panning. The piece is dedicated to my squarepushing friends, who create the most wonderful and complex sonic environments, scrutinizing over sequencer squares.
